Professor of Applied Electromagnetics and Sensing
Electronic & Nanoscale Engineering, James Watt School of Engineering
Qammer H. Abbasi is Professor of Applied Electromagnetics and Sensing at the James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow. He directs the Communication, Sensing and Imaging (CSI) Hub — a research group of 80+ PhD students, 10+ postdoctoral researchers and 25+ academics — and is Founding Director of the Centre for Integrated Sensing, Communication and Computing for Cognitive Cities (ISAC³), launched in February 2026. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, Pakistan, and a PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from Queen Mary University of London (2012).
He has more than 15 years of experience across academia, government and industry, with positions at Queen Mary University of London, UET Lahore, Texas A&M University at Qatar, and the University of Glasgow. His research portfolio exceeds £15 million in grant funding across 66+ funded projects, spanning EPSRC, MRC, DSTL, EU Horizon 2020, Qatar National Research Fund, and industry partners. He currently supervises 23 PhD candidates and more than 10 postdoctoral researchers, and has produced 500+ publications in leading journals (including Nature Communications, Nature Light: Science & Applications, and National Science Review), 14 books, 30+ book chapters, and 13 open datasets.
His research interests include antennas for 5G and 6G, bio-electromagnetics, nano-communication, integrated sensing and communication for cognitive cities, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, terahertz sensing, the Internet of Things, wearable sensors and body-centric wireless communication — including breakthrough work on contactless RF-based lip-reading and intelligent wireless walls for in-home health monitoring.
Beyond the University, he serves as a Policy Advisor to the UK Government Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), a Member of the Scottish Science Advisory Council, an Expert Advisor to Scotland's Technology Council, an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer for the Antennas and Propagation Society (2024–2026), and Chair of the IEEE AP/MTT UK, Ireland and Scotland joint chapter. He completed the Oxford Executive Leadership Programme in 2022 (grade: 95.1%) and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Royal Society of Arts, and the European Alliance for Innovation.
